The No-dqeyesNo-dq of the ANTARES neutrino detector, the optical modules (OMs), contain photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which will measure the Cerenkov light emitted by the products of neutrino-nucleon reactions. To reduce background noise, the electronics of each OM accepts a parameter, which defines the minimum charge the PMT has to collect within a time interval of 25ns in order to trigger the readout procedure.

This noise filter could be circumvented by two or more photons reaching the PMT within the 25ns integration window. These multi-photon events can be caused either by random coincidences at high background rates or by some correlation of background photons at a nanosecond timescale.

Detailed investigations have been performed on this topic, using data from detector prototypes as well as theoretical models. The results from this investigations are presented and an assupmtion on the amount of correlations of background photons is being made.
