Experiments in high energy astrophysics depend largely on efficient and cheap light sensors. Detectors like MAGIC and EUSO can benefit from sensors with single photoelectron resolution and very high quantum efficiency. We are exploring the feasibility of a new technology which is based on the principle of avalanche photo diodes operating in Geiger mode at room temperature. These so called silicon photomultipliers (SiPM’s) are promising replacement candidates for photomultipliers as they exhibit single photoelectron resolution up to several tens of photoelectrons with extraordinary good S/N ratio. We will present the evaluated characteristics of existing SiPM’s that have been developed in Russia.
