Photomultipliers Qualification for the Fluorescence Telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory* — •Viviana Scherini, Karl-Heinz Becker, Anette Behrmann, Elmiloudi Elmechaouri, Heiko Geenen, Steffen Hartmann, Karl-Heinz Kampert, Lorenzo Perrone, Marcus Richter, Zbigniew Szadkowski, and Christopher Wiebusch — Berg. Universität Wuppertal, Gaußstr.20, D-42097 Wuppertal

The Pierre Auger Observatory aims to measure the extensive air showers at energies higher than 1018 eV.
The detector relies on a hybrid measurement technique: a 3000 km2 ground array of 1600 water Cherenkov tanks, overviewed by 24 Fluorescence Telescopes.
A Fluorescence Telescope consists of a Schmidt optical layout with a field of view of 30 deg × 30 deg. The light is collected by a matrix of 440 photomultipliers placed in the focal surface. In total the number of PMTs will be about 11000.
Before installation, each PMT has to pass a detailed acceptance test including a study of the linearity, an analysis of the spectral response, and a measurement of its gain.
We have set up an automated test facility in order to perform such tests on a large amount of PMTs. A description of the measurements and results obtained for the first few thousands of PMTs will be presented.
