Femtosecond laser spectroscopy on free mass-selected transition metal clusters — •J. Stanzel, F. Burmeister, N. Pontius, M. Neeb, and W. Eberhardt — BESSY GmbH, Albert-Einstein-Str. 15, 12489 Berlin, Germany
Clusters in the gas phase are confined systems, where the energy is spatially localized. After optical excitation the energy dissipates among the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom leading for example to thermionic electron emission or thermal desorption of ligand molecules. Using pump and probe femtosecond laser spectroscopy the internal energy dissipation from an optically excited state can be monitored in real time.
Time resolved photoelectron measurements on small Ni, Pd and Pt-Clusters show that the electron relaxation times are only one order of magnitude smaller than for the corresponding bulk. [1,2,3] Further measurements are performed for small W clusters which will be presented here.
