Towards coherent coupling between two nanoparticles mediated by a high-Q microsphere — •Leonardo de S. Whispering gallery modes (WGM) in microspheres (MS) experience very high quality factors, allowing the storage of light in the cavity for up to microseconds. Single nanoparticles (NP) coupled to these WGM are promising candidates for controlled cavity-QED experiments and for quantum information processing. We studied the coupling between two NP via their interaction with the WGM. Coupling is mediated via photons which are emitted from one NP (donor) into the WGM and then absorbed by another NP (acceptor) from the same WGM. Silica MS with  40 µ m in diameter were fabricated and coated with dye-doped beads (size: 200 nm) as acceptors. In order to position the donor at will with nm precision in the evanescent field of the WGM, a 200 nm-diameter red fluorescent bead, was attached to the end of a SNOM tip. After optical excitation, fluorescence from the donor into the WGM excited the acceptor. With a beam scanning confocal microscope, light emitted from a single acceptor was collected and spectrally analysed. We observed energy transfer between two NP, demonstrating the feasibility to realize well-controllable experiments where two NP interact with each other via the coupling to shared high-Q modes.
