We investigate the possibility to use single silicon-vacancy (Si-V) color centers in diamond as a single photon source. The Si-V center is a point defect in diamond, which consists of a silicon atom and a vacancy. It promises to generate single photons within a narrow spectral range at room temperature efficiently. Such a light source is especially desired for quantum cryptography.

Si-V centers were successfully produced in IIa diamond by ion implantation. Single Si-V centers can be detected in samples with suitable ion dose. The nonclassic property of the light from single Si-V centers is investigated by a Hanbury-Brown-Twiss setup.
