Quantum Cryptography is one of the first practical applications of quantum mechanics. A main goal in quantum cryptography is to achieve unconditional secure quantum key distribution between two communicating parties, Alice and Bob, in the presence of a third intervening party, typically called Eve. We analyze symmetric incoherent and coherent attacks by Eve in entanglement-based cryptographic protocols [1,2]. In particular we address questions concerning security limits in cases in which Eve has complete control over the preparation of the entangled state shared between Alice and Bob.
