We present experiments of photoionization of rare gases conducted with phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses. The detected asymmetry of electron emission in the two polarization directions (stereo-ATI) allowed for the first time the unambiguous determination of the absolute phase of the pulse [1] and its spatial variation along the laser focus (Gouy phase, [2]).

Besides the use of the ATI-phasemeter as an essential tool for experiments requiring long-term phase stability, more fundamental aspects of the ionization process will be discussed. In particular, the electrons’ motion under the driving laser field can be reconstructed with unprecedented attosecond resolution.
