In-beam PET for in-situ dose quantification in carbon ion therapy and possible extension to proton therapy — •Katia Parodi and Wolfgang Enghardt — Forschungszentrum Rossendorf e.V., Postfach 510119, 01314 Dresden

Since December 1997 in-beam positron emission tomography is in clinical use for in-situ, non-invasive control of high precision carbon ion treatment at the experimental heavy ion therapy facility at GSI Darmstadt [1]. PET is currently the only available tool for in-vivo validation of the whole chain from treatment planning to irradiation independently on the beam delivery hardware. In order to fulfill the radio-oncologists demand, an interactive approach has been developed for local dose quantification from PET images in case of detection of deviations between planned and really applied treatment [2]. Following the positive clinical impact, in-beam PET will be established at the ion beam therapy facility under construction in Heidelberg, planned to deliver particles from protons up to oxygen nuclei. Hence, the investigation of the extension of the method to other projectiles has been initiated, starting from the lightest and most extensively worlwide used protons. Recent in-beam phantom experiments [3][2] strongly supporting the value of in-beam PET for millimetre range monitoring, verification of the lateral position of the irradiation field as well as as detection of unpredictable deviations between planned and delivered treatment in proton therapy will be presented.
