Bromine species play an important role in the stratospheric ozone depletion, both at high latitudes and at mid-latitudes. However, inspite of its importance, there exist only very few measurements of bromine species in the stratosphere so far. Here we present the first near-global measurements of stratospheric bromine monoxide (BrO) from the SCIAMACHY instrument on board the ENVISAT satellite. The measurements are compared with calculations from a chemical model in order to test our current understanding of the stratospheric bromine chemistry.
