Diffusion of iron in bulk Fe3Si proceeds via nearest-neighbour jumps [1]. The access to x-rays of third generation synchrotron radiation sources enables studies of dynamics in metallic systems in grazing incidence geometry paving the way for surface investigations. An interesting task is the comparison of diffusion in a near-surface layer and in the bulk crystal of Fe3Si. On an Fe3Si thin film produced by annealing of an Fe/Si multilayer created by molecular beam epitaxy, grazing incidence studies of synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy have been performed. The diffusion coefficient of Fe atoms in the bulk is in good agreement with results from previous measurements. We report about enhanced diffusion in a near-surface layer.
