We have measured magnetic out-of-plane and in-plane anisotropy constants of thin Co(0001) films prepared in a wedge formed Mo/Co(0-50ML)/Mo(110) sample grown by molecular beam epitaxy in UHV on α-Al2O3(1120). Our deposition procedure allows the preparation of comparatively inexpensive single crystalline samples that are equivalent to single crystal Mo(110) substrates and facilitates electrical transport measurements.

Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) we have monitored the structure of the prepared films and the elastic strain in the cobalt film. Cobalt grows epitaxially on Mo(110) in the Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation, where Mo[001]∥Co[1120]. The Co films are expanded with constant strain in both lateral direction for D < 30 ML.

Magnetic measurements were performed using Kerr magnetometry in polar and longitudinal geometry. The Co films reveal an uniaxial anisotropy with an easy axis in Co[1100] direction. Magnetic anisotropies are dominated by volume-type strain anisotropies. We find an in-plane anisotropy constant Kv, p = 0.079 MJ/m3. In contrast to Co/W(110) films, the surface type anisotropies are very small. This fact might be attributed to the smaller spin-orbit coupling at the interface.
