Regarding the increasing interest in spin valve devices, we have performed an experimental microscopic study of the exchange bias phenomenon and of the interfacial spin structure in Fe/FeSn_2 systems with epitaxial antiferromagnetic (AF) layers. These were grown by MBE on InSb(001) substrates. The Neél temperature of the AF FeSn_2 layer was controlled ny the substrate temperature and subsequent annealing treatments. The Fe/FeSn_2 bilayers have been cooled down in fields of 0.05 T. Exchange fields up to 240 Oe were observed by SQUID magnetometry at low temperatures. The spin structure and the interfacial atomic diffusion at different temperatures were inferred from 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) using tracer layers. The spin re-orientations induced by the interfacial coupling were interpreted with different angular spin distribution models and discussed in relation to the pinning phenomena.
