Out-of-plane magnetization in ultrathin Co films grown at low temperatures on Pd(111) — •M. Wasniowska, M. Przybylski, W. Wulfhekel, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle

Ultrathin Co films were deposited at 170K on Pd(111). In the thickness range at which the Co double-layer patches coalesce to form a continuous film (between 1.7ML and 2ML), no MOKE hysteresis loops could be detected at the deposition temperature. After the films were warmed up to 300K, out-of-plane hysteresis loops appeared. This is due to a strongly reduced coercivity which decreases with increasing temperature. Only at about 220K the coercivity becomes smaller than the maximum available field of 30mT. In the case of 2.6ML of Co deposited at 300K, only an in-plane magnetic signal was measured. With gentle annealing to 370K, out-of-plane hysteresis loops appeared. This results in part due to a structural reconstruction during annealing (clearly seen within the STM images) as the loops do not show the same shape after cooling back to 300K. MOKE loops corresponding to Co films magnetized out-of-plane are reversed in comparison to in-plane loops, i.e. a negative ellipticity is detected at positive fields. This is due to the magneto-optical properties of the Co/Pd(111) system as will be discussed.
