The presence of electron-electron interaction affects the persistent currents flowing in mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux. We study an interacting one-dimensional clean ring. It is known that the ground-state of such a one-dimensional conductor is a Luttinger liquid. We derive the zero-mode Hamiltonian for the system, and subsequently the average value of the persistent current. In particular, we find that the persistent current has a universal form as a function of T/T*, Φ/Φ*, where both the temperature scale T* and the flux period Φ* are renormalized by the interaction strength. Certain formal analogies with the noninteracting case suggest that the interaction-dependent flux period can be seen as a manifestation of electron fractionalization in a Luttinger liquid [1].
