Charge Quantization and the Geometry of Spontaneously Broken Gauge Theories — •Jürgen Tolksdorf — Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik, Universität Mannheim, Seminargebäude A5/C208, D-68131 Mannheim

We discuss Dirac’s famous quantization condition of electric charge in terms of the geometry of the electroweak interaction. It is shown that Dirac monopoles can be considered as gauge inequivalent ground states of the Higgs boson. These states fully determine the topological structure of the electroweak gauge bundle. The triviality of the latter is shown to be equivalent to the existence of electric charge conjugation.
