We present a new concept of a Penning trap, which is planar and allows for the implementation of novel confinement techniques. The trap provides confinement perpendicular to its plane by an electrical potential minimum while a superimposed magnetic field provides radial confinement. Both the axial position and the depth of the potential minimum can be controlled by the applied voltages. In this poster we are going to present both theoretical and experimental studies, the former being a complete characterization supported by numerical simulation demonstrating the possibility of confinement with precision. The experimental part is presently preliminary, but a quantitative overview of our results will be given.
