Hydrogen atom in an inhomogeneous magnetic field treated as a two-body problem: the quadrupole trap — •Hannes Bock — Universität Heidelberg

Theoretical/Numerical Investigation of the dynamics of a hydrogen-like atom in a magnetic quadrupole trap as used in cold atom experiments. The system is treated as a two-body problem, i.e. charge- and spin-coupling of both nucleus and electron to the quadrupole field are taken into account. Fine- and Hyperfine interactions are neglected. An adiabatic approximation is used to calculate the electronic energy surfaces as a function of the center of mass position. The symmetries of the quadrupole field (rotational- and mirror symmetry) are exploited to reduce the number of degrees of freedom. For the numerical computation, a basis set method (variational principle) is employed.
