Control of laser-induced atomic quantum dynamics by additional external fields — •R. Fischer and C.H. Keitel — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

With increasing laser intensity atomic electrons subjected to a laser field can be accelerated to velocities reaching a few percent of the speed of light. In this weakly relativistic regime the magnetic field component of the laser field induces a drift of the electrons. However, having an experimental situation or a technological application in mind, the generation of high harmonic radiation for example, this drift is to be regarded as rather detrimental. The question of how this drift can be controlled arises. Therefore we have solved the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically beyond the dipole approximation for a hydrogen-like two-dimensional model ion subjected to a strong laser pulse. We have shown that the electronic quantum dynamics can be controlled to some degree by means of a static electric and a time-dependent electric field, respectively[1].

We also plan to present recent studies aiming to control the atomic quantum dynamics in strong laser fields by an external static magnetic field.
