Theory of excitation of heavy nuclei by electron capture — •Adriana Pálffy, Zoltán Harman, and Werner Scheid — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, Heinrich-Buff-Ring 16, 35392 Giessen

We consider the resonant process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC), in which an electron from the continuum is captured into a bound state of an ion with the simultaneous excitation of the nucleus. This process is the time-inverse process of the internal conversion. The excited nuclear state can then decay radiatively by the emission of a photon or by internal conversion. The investigation of the NEEC opens the possibility to explore the spectral properties of heavy nuclei through atomic physics experiments. We calculate the transition rate of this process considering heavy nuclei which can be excited by E2 or M1 transitions with energies that make the resonant process possible. We present NEEC cross sections for various collision systems.
