Towards a Degenerate Fermi Gas on an Atom Chip — •Christoph Hufnagel, Christoph vom Hagen, Stephan Schneider, Martin Göbel, Louw Feenstra, and Jörg Schmiedmayer — Physikalisches Institut der Universität Heidelberg, Philosophenweg 12, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany

We suggest to apply Atom Chips [Fol02] to manipulate fermionic systems. These tight trapping potentials will lead to 1-D Fermi systems. With the freedom of design of these microscopic, strongly confining trapping potentials a variety of mesoscopic systems, similar to quantum electronics and Ising like systems can be studied. Furthermore the combination of bose and fermi systems is possible.

We studied the properties of an ultra cold 6Li - 87Rb mixture, as the first step towards sympathetic cooling of 6Li in this Bose Fermi mixture. Only small losses in the magneto-optical trap and magnetic trap were observed, which gives hope that the 6Li - 87Rb system is suitable for sympathetic cooling.

With an Atom Chip in our system we will study the cooling behavior of this mixture, and will report on our experimental progress towards achieving degeneracy in a mixed 6Li - 87Rb system.
