Photofragmentation at wavelengths near and below 100 nm has a significant influence on the abundance of small molecular ions in astrophysical environments, where these species drive further reactions that control the formation and cooling of interstellar clouds. The fragmentation processes of molecular ions on highly excited potential surfaces, accessible with Vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) wavelengths, are so far largely unexplored with respect to experimental energy dependent cross sections and branching ratios. In 2005, the new VUV Free Electron Laser (FEL) facility at Deutsches Electronen-SYnchrotron (DESY) will start operation for users. An experimental setup for studies of photodissociation of cold molecular ions, using a combination of fast beam, ion trapping, and imaging techniques has been realized at the Max-Planck-Institute für Kernphysik (MPIK) in Heidelberg, and will be adapted to the new light source during 2005. We will describe the new ion beam line and report results from the first test experiments with UV photodissociation.
