Search for permanent electric dipole moment in Radium — •U. Dammalapati, S. De, K. Jungmann, and L. Willmann — Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Zernikelaan 25, 9747 AA Groningen

A permanent electric dipole moment (edm) of a fundamental particle violates time reversal symmetry as well as parity. Any measurable edm would indicate physics beyond the standard model. Recently it was pointed out that due to the atomic structure some short lived Radium isotopes are good candidates for new types of experiments. A new facility (TRIµP: Trapped Radioactive Isotopes: µ-laboratories for fundamental Physics) to produce and trap such radioactive isotopes is currently under construction at our institute. Currently we are working towards trapping and cooling of heavy alkaline earth. We are working on laser cooling and trapping of Barium, which has a level scheme similar to Radium. We will discuss our laser cooling scheme and will show first results. Several lasers for repumping out of metastable states are required. In addition we determine the hyperfine structure, isotope shifts and the lifetimes of 3P states in preparation for a measurement of these quatities in radium. This information is needed as input for atomic structure calculations and an evaluation of the sensitivity of radium for an edm search.
