Photon–photon angular corelation in the two-photon decay of heavy hydrogen-like ions. — •Peter Koval, Andrey Surzhykov, and Stephan Fritzsche — Heinrich-Plett-Str. 40, University of Kassel, Germany.

For many years, the two-photon decay of heavy atoms and ions has been the subject of intensive investigations, both by experiment and theory. While in the past, however, most of these studies were focused on the total decay rates, much of the present interest is focused on the angular correlations between two emitted photons [1]. In this contribution, we study the angular correlations in the two-photon decay of heavy hydrogen-like ions. Second-order perturbation approach, based on Dirac’s equation, is applied in our theoretical description in order to explore how the angle–angle correlations are affected by the relativistic contraction of the wavefunctions as well as by the higher multipoles in the decomposition of radiation field [2]. Apart from these—relativistic and retardation—effects, we also discuss the energy dependence of the photon–photon correlations. In particular, for 3s1/2 → 1s1/2 decay it is found that the angular corelation function 1 + cos2(θ) to 2 + sin2(θ) in dependence on the energy of one of the emitted photons.
