Experiments with spin–polarized, heavy ion beams at storage rings currently attract much interest in atomic, nuclear and high–energy physics. While, however, a scheme for producing polarized heavy ions has been discussed at a number of places [1, 2], the measurement (and, hence, the diagnostics) of the ion polarization remains up to now an unresolved problem. In this contribution, we propose to utilize the radiative electron capture (REC) into high–Z projectiles as a probe process for determining the spin–polarization of the ion beams. In particular, we demonstrate that the linear polarization of the recombination x–ray photons is quite sensitive to the spin states of the particles, involved in the collision. For the K–shell electron recombination of heavy, hydrogen–like ions, for instance, a non–zero polarization of the ions results in an overall rotation of the linear polarization of REC photons out of the reaction plane, which may be observed by applying the position–sensitive polarization detectors. Detailed calculations have been carried out for the electron capture into hydrogen–like europium Eu62+ and bismuth Bi82+ ions and show the dependence of the rotation angle as function of the ion polarization and the projectile energies.
