Electron transfer and ionisation in H+-Na collisions are dominated by one-electron transitions of the initial Na(3s) electron. Accordingly, one-electron descriptions with frozen inner target electrons were employed in previous theoretical works. However, inner-shell capture was observed very recently in a MOTRIMS (Magneto Optical Trapping Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy) experiment [1] calling for a more complete treatment of the collision system.

In the present study the basis generator method [2] is used to propagate all initially occupied orbitals of the Na atom in an effective single-particle potential made up of the Coulomb potentials of the nuclei and a term that accounts for the electron-electron interaction. The single-particle solutions are then analysed on the level of the independent particle model. We address inner- and outer-shell capture and ionisation in the 2–100 keV impact energy regime. Detailed comparisons with previous and, in particular, with new MOTRIMS experiments will be presented, and the role of multi-electron dynamics will be discussed.
