Recently, a number of experiments have been performed at the GSI storage ring in order to explore the radiative electron capture (REC) into the excited states of heavy projectile ions. The great promise of such studies is that the measurements on the subsequent decay of the excited states provide unique information about both, their population dynamics as well as the electronic structure of the ions. For the proper analysis of these – structural and dynamical – properties of heavy projectiles, however, a precise knowledge is required on the magnetic sublevel population of the (excited) ion states. In practice, this population arises not only from the direct electron capture into the given state but also from the cascade feeding from the high–lying levels.

In this contribution, we present theoretical calculations for the magnetic sublevel population of the excited states of hydrogen–like, heavy ions, following the radiative capture of free electrons. Similar to the previous studies, we consider the population mechanisms of the excited ions from both, the direct electron capture as well as from the feedings from the upper levels. Special emphasis is placed on the magnetic sublevel population of the 2p3/2 state for which the alignment and orientation parameters are calculated for a wide range of projectile energies and for different spin states of electron target and projectile ions.
