An ultracold gas of Rydberg atoms — •Markus Reetz-Lamour, Thomas Amthor, Johannes Deiglmayr, Kilian Singer, and Matthias Weidemueller — Phys. Inst. Univ. Freiburg, Hermann-Herder-Str. 3, 79104 Freiburg

When ultracold atoms are excited into Rydberg states a strongly interacting gas is created. Because the atoms do not move appreciably over the timescales given by the Rydberg atoms’ lifetime this gas resembles an amorphous solid. Combined with the strong interaction between Rydberg atoms this system therefore constitutes a unique model for the study of many body effects.

We present our experimental setup and prospects of our experiment together with the latest measurements. This includes the demonstration of the dipole blockade [1], which has prospects for quantum information processing with neutral atoms [2].
