In a diploma thesis the capabilities of a procedure, developed by the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK), for estimating tensile properties from spherical indentation was investigated. The identification of the viscoplastic stress-strain behaviour is based on neural networks.

Several multi cycling indentation experiments were performed, analysed and compared with known results from tensile tests. The influence of force loading rates, ball indenter radii and specimen surface properties on the stress-strain behaviour were studied.

Furthermore the procedure of the FZK was optimized and compared with the approximate method of the representative strain, a Korean ISO proposal. The results will help to improve the validated method and to extend the international standard ISO 14577.
