The electronically excited states HCl(E1Σ+, v’ = 0, J’) and HCl(V1Σ+ , v’ = 12, J’), denoted HCl*, has been prepared by two-photon resonant absorption of the ground state HCl. The consequent absorption of two photons at the same wavelength results in production of H+ ions. The speed distributions and anisotropy parameters β for these ions have been determined by three-dimensional photofragment ion imaging technique. The alignment of the excited state of HCl was determined from the comparison of the velocity (speed and angle) distributions of H+ ions obtained for j′=j″=0 and j′=j″=1 rotation transitions.
