Phase-sensitive Optimal Control Theory and its applications to molecular switches — •Dorothee Geppert1,2 and Regina de Vivie-Riedle1,21LMU München, Department Chemie, Butenandtstr. 11, 81377 München — 2MPI für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85741 Garching

We present a variant of the Optimal Control Theory algorithm which enables us to control the absolute phase of a wavepacket by using optimized ultrashort laser pulses[1]. Both real and imaginary part of the wavepacket are optimized to match the target wavefunction. This concept provides the possibility to control a wavepacket’s momentum, localization and shape simultaneously. As hereby its direction as well as its velocity can be controlled, the wavepacket can be guided even through an optically dark region.

We investigate ultrafast photoinduced reactions mediated by conical intersections with the special focus on bistable molecules which can act as molecular switches. In these systems, the region of allowed transition is limited and consequently the control window is narrow. Our studies for molecular switches with cyclohexadiene as active center show that it is possible to enhance the favored pathway and thereby increase the product distribution[2] or to inhibit the favored pathway which leads to an extension of the excited state’s life time.
