A remote ellipsometer for TEXTOR — •Timo Dittmar and Achim von Keudell — Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Deposition and erosion of plasma faced surfaces within fusion reactors are a key issue for the life time estimation of the first wall of present and future fusion experiments. At the present an in-situ ascertainment of erosion rates or even changes in composition and texture of the deposited layers is not possible. This gap can be closed with the constructing of an in-situ reverse ellipsometer. Since ellipsometry offers high sensitivity, it is feasible to study processes at the plasma-wall interface in real time and with high accuracy. Ellipsometry possesses (a) mono layer film thickness resolution and (b) allows the precise determination of the optical properties of thin films. Since the optical constants of a material are closely linked with its stoichiometry it is possible to correlate them with the composition.
