Collisionless reconnection using Vlasov–Darwin simulations — •Holger Schmitz and Rainer Grauer — Theoretische Physik I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 44780 Bochum

We present a 2x3v Vlasov–Darwin code and the results of simulation collisionless reconnection. In the Darwin approximation of Maxwell’s equations the transverse part of the displacement current is neglected. This effectively decouples Faraday’s law from Ampere’s law thus eliminating purely electromagnetic vacuum modes. The CFL condition on the time step of the Vlasov simulation is therefore not determined by the light speed but by the much lower phase velocity of magnetosonic wave modes. With this code we simulate collisionless magnetic reconnection assuming that the purely electromagnetic modes are not important. We compare with previous Vlasov simulations of the reconnection setup by Wiegelmann and Büchner [1]. For comparison with MHD simulations of the reconnection process we identify regions in the current sheet where the different contributions of generalized Ohm’s law become important. These contributions are calculated not from Ohm’s law itself but directly from the moments of the distribution function.
