Preparing ITER - Is the heat load compatible with first wall materials? — •A. Herrmann, J. Neuhauser, G. Pautasso, and ASDEX Upgrade team — Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching

The next step fusion experiment ITER is aimed to demonstrate applicability of nuclear fusion for energy production. During the past years operation scenarios with performance factors exceeding the extrapolated design parameters for ITER are developed at divertor experiments, e.g. at ASDEX Upgrade and JET. This high confinement operation requires a strong transport barrier at the plasma edge with steep pressure gradients, which in turn cause MHD instabilities releasing up to 10 percent of the plasma energy on a time scale of a few hundred of microseconds. A comparable heat load appears during abnormal plasma terminations. These burst like energy release on such short time scales is no limitation for the operation in present machines, but might be intolerable in the next step experiment due to the decreasing ratio of available area for heat removal to plasma stored energy with increasing size of the experiment. Compatibility of first wall materials and plasma performance becomes a significant criterion for the development of operation scenarios. Investigation of heat load to first wall components during short time events is a main topic of the research program in ASDEX Upgrade. The paper summarizes the results of first wall heat load investigations and discusses the consequences for ITER.
