Mode and group velocity dispersion evolution in the tapered region of a single-mode tapered fiber — •Rui Zhang, Sebastian Pricking, Xinping Zhang, and Harald Giessen — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Wegelerstr. 8, D-53115 Bonn

Until now, a lot of publications have concentrated on the waist region of tapered fibers. However, a complete model of the propagation characteristics in such systems must take into account the transition or taper region where the diameter is varying along the fiber. We theoretically investigate the evolution of the intensity distribution of the mode, the nonlinear parameter, and the group velocity dispersion (GVD) in the taper transition region. To evaluate the propagation constant, which can determine those parameters as mentioned above, we use two theoretical models: a scalar wave equation and a full vector Maxwell equation. Using the calculations, we demonstrate a complete characterization of light propagation and nonlinear interaction processes in tapered fibers, which should be taken into account in both experimental analysis and device design. We have especially pointed out that the dispersion of the GVD and the nonlinear interaction within the taper region has significant influence on the propagation of spectrally broad supercontinuum pulses. We also present experimental GVD measurements of the taper region in tapered fibers.
