We study the merging of two spatially separated 1D Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature, where phase fluctuations play an important role. We show that, at zero temperature, the two condensates merge into a single one with a negligible phase difference. At finite temperatures, below the critical temperature for condensation the melting process becomes very critical, leading to an eventual destruction of the condensate. Our results may have important implications for a continuous atom laser.
