New Features in Coherent Population Trapping — •Luca Spani Molella, Rolf-Hermann Rinkleff, and Karsten Danzmann — Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik und Institut für Atom- und Molekülphysik, Universität Hannover, Callinstraße 38, D-30167 Hannover, Germany.

In recent years the interest in coherent media and slow light has furthered the discovery and analysis of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). Aim of this work was to provide insight into some new phenomena which occur in a typical EIA closed transition. In this research the absorption of a probe and a coupling laser at the F=4 to F’=5 transition of the Cs D2 line was analyzed. A third laser allowed simultaneous dispersion measurements for one of the two lasers (alternatively chosen). While the detuned probe was run through the resonance it showed EIA, the coupling laser showing simultaneously EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency). These new absorptive and dispersive features and their theoretical analysis are presented. The results were obtained over several decades of power for both lasers. For sake of comparison we present analogous results obtained with the F=3 to F’=2 in which EIT instead of EIA occurs.
