Synchrotron Stereotactic Radiotherapy for the treatment of brain tumors: dosimetric aspects for clinical trials — •Caroline Boudou1, Marie-Claude Biston1, Aurélie Joubert1, Jean-François Adam1, Anne-Marie Charvet1, Claudio Ferrero2, François Estève1,3, and Hélène Elleaume11INSERM-U647 "Rayonnement synchrotron et recherche médicale", Grenoble, France — 2European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF, Grenoble, France — 3Unité IRM, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Grenoble, France

In synchrotron stereotactic radiotherapy (SSR) the tumor is loaded with atoms of high atomic number (Z), prior to a sliced irradiation performed with a fitted monochromatic low energy x-ray beam from a synchrotron source. This method is under investigation at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) for the treatment of brain tumors. Very encouraging results obtained on a rat’s model disclose new perspectives for clinical trials.

Commercial treatment planning systems are not suitable for this new technique since the beam energy, the irradiation geometry and the potential presence of high Z elements differ from conventional systems. We designed an interface for dose computation based on a Monte Carlo code (MCNPX); and studied the use of various radiosensitive gels for experimental dosimetry using the synchrotron radiation. The communication will describe these dosimetry methods.
