Muon-induced background in GERDA — •Michael Bauer, Peter Grabmayr, Josef Jochum, Klemens Rottler, and Stephan Scholl — Physikalisches Institut I, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

The GERDA double beta decay experiment proposed at Gran Sasso intends to check the current evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay with higher significance. In order to reach this goal, a reduction of background by a factor of 100-1000 compared to current experiments is needed. One of the contributions to the background are radioactive isotopes which are produced by high energy neutrons induced by cosmic ray muons. To investigate the relevance of this background for different options of the detector setup we perform GEANT4 simulations of neutron and isotope production in different materials. Preliminary results of these simulations are presented.
