Frictional Cooling Demonstration Experiment — •Daniel Kollar1, Raphael Galea2, Allen Caldwell1, and Daniel Greenwald11Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, Föhringer Ring 6, 80805 München — 2Clumbia University, Irvington, NY 10533

Considering the mass of the muon together with the fact that it is a point-like particle, advantages of a muon collider over electron and proton colliders are clear from both construction and physics point of view. The nonexistence of a solution for muon cooling (emittance reduction of the muon beam) as a necessary part of the collider scheme is at the moment the biggest obstacle in the realization of the muon collider.

At the MPI a cooling scheme based on a frictional cooling is being investigated. Currently, an experiment is underway, in which we try to demonstrate the frictional cooling on protons. This includes measuring the energy of protons after they pass through a gas cell while a constant accelerating force is applied to them. The status of the experiment and first results will be presented.
