Novel Technology: A Multiplexed Fiber-Optic Ultra Fast FADC Readout for the MAGIC Telescope — •Hendrik Bartko, Florian Goebel, Razmick Mirzoyan, Wendelin Pimpl, and Masahiro Teshima — MPI für Physik, München

In order to reduce the different strong backgrounds in new generation Air Cherenkov Telescopes one can use ultra fast digitalization. This allows one to lower the analysis threshold. In addition, precise measurements of the timing structure of the Cherenkov pulses can strongly increase the separation power of gammas from backgrounds.

At the Max-Planck-Institut für Physik in München a 2 GSamples/s readout system has been developed using a novel technique of Fiber-Optic Multiplexing. GSamples/s flash ADCs are commercially available but are very expensive and power consuming. The new technique uses a 2 GSamples/s FADC to digitize 16 read-out channels consecutively. The analog signals are delayed using optical fibers. A trigger signal is generated using a fraction of light that is branched off using a fiber-optic splitter.

Two prototype multiplexers, for 32 channels in total, have been built and tested as a future readout option of the MAGIC telescope. The ultra fast readout system will be described and the test results will be presented. It is planned to replace the current 300 MSamples/s FADC readout of MAGIC with the new readout in 2005.
