The development of new photo detector, ’HPD’ for MAGIC-II — •Masaaki Hayashida1, Eckart Lorenz2, Razmik Mirzoyan1, Masahiro Teshima1, and Hamamatsu Photonics31Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München — 2Institute for Particle Physics, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich — 3Hamamatsu, JAPAN

The first 17 m-diameter Imaging Air Čerenkov Telescope (IACT), MAGIC-I, is now in operation observing cosmic γ sources at very low energies (< 100 GeV). However, even lower energy threshold and higher sensitivity are still desired, especially for the study of high red-shift objects. The upgrade with the second 17 m IACT, namely MAGIC-II, is scheduled to happen in 2006. For further lowering of the energy threshold, already several years we are developing a new ’Hybrid Photo Detector (HPD)’ with Hamamatsu photonics. The new HPDs have GaAsP photocathode and an effective aperture of 18 mm in diameter. The quantum efficiency reaches about 50 % at the peak wavelength of 500 nm. Application of these HPDs can be seen as an equivalent increase of the reflector diameter of MAGIC from 17 m to 24 m. In this talk, we will show the performance of the HPDs and the physics impact of application of these new sensors.
