Simulation of the Neutron Background in Direct Dark Matter Searches — •Stephan Scholl, Michael Bauer, Josef Jochum, and Klemens Rottler — Physikalisches Institut I, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

Direct dark matter searches like the CRESST and the EDELWEISS experiment try to detect the energy of the recoiling nucleus in the collision of dark matter particles with the target nuclei. By measuring the light/ionisation and the heat simultaneously, the β and γ background can be clearly distinguished from nuclear recoils. Thus, the dominant background for these experiments is given by neutrons of radioactive and cosmogenic origin. In order to improve the sensitivity, a suitable neutron–shield and myon veto has to be constructed. For this task, the understanding of the neutron background and its interactions in the detector is crucial. We use monte–carlo simulations in the GEANT4 tool to simulate the neutron interactions. The reliability of these simulations in the low energy regime are checked with experiments.
