The area of the Pearl–River–Delta (PRD) comprising Hong Kong, Guangzhou and other mega cities is one of the industrially fastest developing areas of the world. This development is accompanied by air pollution which worsens air quality far beyond what is found in Europe. The PRD experiment took place in October 2004. One of the motivations for this study is the question raised by Chinese authorities regarding the main sources of pollution in that area. Within this experiment the mini Raman lidar Polly of the Institute for Tropospheric Research had been operated. The presentation deals with vertical profiles of the aerosol backscatter and the extinction coefficient, their temporal development, retrieved aerosol information, and identification of source areas of the rather high pollution.
