We present here the Bremen AErosol Retrieval algorithm (BAER) and the SemiAnalytical CloUd Retrieval Algorithm (SACURA). They combine LUTs with the asymptotic theory for optically thick slabs. The task of this paper is the application of both algorithms to the data obtained using the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectrometer for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) oboard the ENVironmental SATellite (ENVISAT). Technical characteristics of the SCIAMACHY are given by Bovensmann et al. (1999). Details of the BAER and SACURA are specified by Kokhanovsky et al.(2003) and von Hoyningen-Huene et al.(2003). We derive various aerosol and cloud parameters from SCIAMACHY measurements, including the aerosol and cloud optical thickness, cloud droplet radius, liquid water content, cloud thermodynamic state and cloud top height. The determination of such a long list of parameters is possible due to the broad spectral range of SCIAMACHY ( from 240 till 2380nm) coupled with high spectral resolution (0.22-1.6nm depending on the channel) of this advanced optical instrument. This allows to use gaseous absorption bands for aerosol and cloud altitudes profiling. Results of retrievals can be found at www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de.
