The study and characterization of plasma turbulence is of great importance for understanding tokamak confinement, since turbulence is believed to be responsible for anomalous transport. Localized measurements of the turbulence (frequency and wavenumber spectra, turbulence amplitude, etc.) are necessary to identify and fully characterize the plasma turbulence. A diagnostic technique capable of providing all these measurements is Doppler reflectometry - which is a type of microwave radar with a tilted antenna sensitive to radially localized Bragg scattering. The measured Doppler frequency shift is directly proportional to the perpendicular plasma rotation, from which the radial electric field (Er) and the Er-shear can be obtained. Here, we discuss the diagnostic capabilities on ASDEX Upgrade with illustrative results, and planned hardware extensions - multiple reflectometer channels to increase radial coverage from edge to core and a steerable antenna for dynamic wavenumber selection up to 16 cm−1.
