Behavior of Fe and Cu in ASDEX Upgrade Discharge — •Igor Radivojevic, Thomas Pütterich, Rudolf Neu, Arne Kallenbach, and Ralph Dux — IPP, Boltzmannstr. 2, 85748 Garching bei München

The tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is moving to a fully tungsten device. Still, some parts of vessel wall structure and different diagnostic systems inside the vessel candidates as sources of other metallic impurities, iron and copper at the first place. Indeed, different spectroscopic signals indicate pollution of plasma core with those elements during various discharge scenarios. Furthermore, simple calculations on radiation losses and change of Zeff show that their impact on plasma performance can not be neglected . This work presents the investigations of Fe and Cu in AUG plasma using emission lines from soft x-ray spectroscopic region. The diagnostics are established, based on measured line intensities and available atomic data, and capable for routine monitoring of Fe and Cu concentrations. The possible sources and impurity production mechanisms are discussed. With help of laser blow-off injection system, defined amounts of Fe and Cu particles were introduced in different plasma discharges and quantities describing the penetration, transport and exhaust are determined. The behavior of Fe and Cu impurities in characteristic discharge scenarios are observed and compared to some extent with the behavior of W. At the end of the work correlation between impurity concentration and other plasma parameter are made.
