Theory of screened Coulomb balls — •Volodymyr Golubnychiy, Henning Baumgartner, Alexei Filinov, and Michael Bonitz — Institut für Theoretische Physik und Astrophysik, Leibnizstr. 15, D-24098 Kiel

We give an overview on theoretical and first-principle computer simulation (Molecular dynamics and Monte-Carlo) results for spherical dust particle clusters (Coulomb balls) [1]. The recently proposed theoretical models [2-4] are discussed. It is demonstrated that the model of static screening with a constant parabolic confinement allows for a consistent explanation of the experimental results [4], in contrast to the model of selfconfinement of Ref.[2]. Furthermore, analytical results for the screening dependence of the cluster size, distance fluctuations, stability and melting behavior are presented. In particular, it is demonstrated that screening destabilizes the Coulomb balls.
