With the recent discovery of spherical dust crystals [1], there is increased interest in theoretical understanding of the structure of finite spherical charged particle systems in traps. Besides computer simulations, analytical models play an essential role, in particular for clusters of increased size. Simple onion shell models have been proposed in Refs. [3,4]. However, comparison to simulations shows substantial discrepancies. We analyze the reasons for these deviations and derive an improved onion shell model which allows for excellent agreement with the simulation results for the cluster structure and will be useful for comparison with experimental results, in particular for larger clusters.
