Hyperthermal neutrals produced through surface neutralisation of ions are of significant importance for various mechanisms in plasmas, both at the plasma edge of future fusion devices and in low temperature plasmas. Hydrogen and deuterium ions produced in an inductively coupled RF discharge are neutralised on and reflected from the surface of a biased metal electrode. The energy distribution function of hyperthermal atoms is measured with a mass resolved energy analyser. The obtained energy spectrum can be explained as a superposition of individual spectra of the various ion species (H+, H2+, H3+ and D+, D2+, D3+, correspondingly).

A hyperthermal atom beam source with defined energy can be used for surface investigations. First experiments of the interaction of hyperthermal neutral particles with metal surfaces were carried out. Electron emission from noble metal surfaces (Ag and Au) caused by hyperthermal hydrogen and deuterium atoms has been studied. The most striking result is the absence of a kinetic energy threshold. An isotope effect has also been observed.

The project was funded by the DFG in the frame of the SFB 616.
